Welcome to stop 2 of "The Mine Side" children's tour!
What is that? A tiny spacecraft, perhaps? No, it's a telephone booth.
A hundred years ago, mobile phones didn't exist. If you wanted to make a call while you were out in town, you had to go to one of these booths.
Eventually, everyone had a telephone at home. It was fixed to the wall with a cord, so you couldn't walk around while talking.
The telephone booths were owned by the Telecommunications Company. Inside, there was a large telephone on one wall, and hanging on a hook beside it was a thick book called a telephone directory. It contained the names and phone numbers of everyone in Falun. Although you often knew your friends' numbers by heart.
You had to insert a coin into the telephone, pick up the receiver, dial the number, and then, if you were lucky, someone would answer on the other end.
There was often a line of people waiting outside the telephone booth, eager to make a call. So you couldn't talk for too long.
You can ask your grandparents about it. They surely remember what it was like to make a call from a telephone booth like this.
Uven: "When the mine was at its peak in the late 1600s, there wasn't a single telephone in the whole world!"
