Welcome to stop 1 of "The Mine Side" children's tour!
Falu River flows through the entire town, starting from Kvarnbron in Östanfors, passing under numerous bridges, and finally reaching Tisken. In the past, Falun was a bustling port city, and the water was incredibly important.
People used to wash clothes in the river, row on its waters, and large boats sailed back and forth, loaded with treasures unearthed from the mine.
All the copper was weighed before being loaded onto the boats. This building is called Copper Weighing House. It was here that all the copper was weighed.
Not only was the local dialect spoken here, but many people also spoke German. They were attracted to Falun to work and contribute to the development of the copper mine. They possessed extensive knowledge of mechanics and mining techniques.
Do you notice the different years written on the stones along the wall beneath Copper Weighing House? They indicate the various heights the water of the river has reached in different years. Sometimes, Falu River overflowed and flooded the streets.
Oh no, how high can the water rise?
Erik: "That ship is probably heading to Stockholm and beyond, carrying its precious cargo."
This city tour is funded by Tillväxtverket.
