Welcome to stop 5 of the Children's Tour, "The Fine Side."
Almost all the wooden houses in Falun are painted with the paint Falu Rödfärg. Even these row houses next to us, although they are quite newly built. It's clear that many people love that color.
Did you know that genuine paint Falu Rödfärg is only made here in Falun and nowhere else? It's because the yellow-red ore piles up by the mine must be included in the recipe for making Falu Red paint. That's why the paint factory is located right next to Falun Mine. Close and convenient.
Falu Rödfärg preserves the wood so well, just like the mine worker Fet-Mats was preserved. You can hear the story about Mats if you visit the Mine.
Another material used for building houses here in town was slag stone. Over there, on the other side of the river, you can see one of those houses. Slag was the waste left behind when all the metals were extracted from the stones. It's clever to be able to use it in a good way! And it turned out beautifully as well.
Sneak past towards the bushes over there on the left before the bridge! Listen carefully. Sometimes it sounds like they're giggling. It's full of small birds hanging out in there among the leaves.
