Welcome to stop 4 of the Children's Tour, "The Fine Side."
When Brita and Erik lived at Elsborg, they had to help their mother in various ways. One never-ending task was fetching water from a spring or well. There was absolutely no running water indoors from a tap.
They carried the water in wooden buckets. But they didn't drink the water because it didn't taste good. It wasn't clean. Instead, they drank beer or sour milk.
Over there, on the other side of Nybron, you can see Falun's last pumping station. It was built in the 1850s. Water was pumped directly from Falu River. The water here was a bit cleaner, but still not something people drank.
Water pipes to all the houses in Falun didn't come until 1898.
Gullviva: "I actually think the water tastes pretty okay".
This city tour is funded by Tillväxtverket.
