You have now arrived at stop 15 of the Children's Tour, "The Fine Side."
To this square, the Falun locals came to shop in the olden days. It was like a big grocery store, but outdoors.
Here, they sold vegetables, eggs, meat, fish, bread, flowers, and candies - well, everything you can think of. On Saturdays, you could even buy a live pig or a horse if you wanted to, just like in the books about Emil in Lönneberga.
There weren't any cars, but there were plenty of market stalls where aunties and uncles sold their goods. There were Fläsk-Mina and Kött-Nanna, Slaktar-Gustaf, and Karamell-Emma. Emma was a kind lady who traveled around with a small cart full of homemade candies.
By the way, Fläsk-Mina lived in that red house on the other side of Kristine Bridge. Today, it's called Ria Cottage, and those in need can go there for food and a little warmth.
In 1977, they stopped selling goods at Fisktorget (Fish Market). The vendors returned to Stora Torget (Main Square). Today, you can buy vegetables, fruits, and ice cream there during the summer. But where do we buy all other food?
"But look, there's Spruthuset again! Shall we go there and see how it feels to sit on their pier? What do you see from there?"
This city tour is funded by Tillväxtverket.
