You have now arrived at stop 12 of the Children's Tour, "The Fine Side."
Here is Stora Torget (the Main Square) with the magnificent town hall. Do you see all the people and horses and wagons? I think there's a market today.
But who is sitting in the lamppost, and what is he doing?
He works as a lamplighter. There are no electric lights yet, only gas lanterns. Every evening, he has to climb up and light the lanterns with a wooden torch.
Although he doesn't have the torch between his teeth like the miners did when they descended into the underground. Down there in the dark tunnels, the burning torches were needed.
The lamplighter knows what to do. Every evening, he climbs up the lampposts and lights them. And in the mornings, when the sun has risen, he blows out the light through a long metal tube. Clever, isn't it?
Goat: "Seems like hard work, if you ask me".
Erik: "Where we live, only the fire in the stove lights up the room during the winter months. Sometimes, Mom sits there mending our clothes. The rest of us go to bed, there's nothing else to do in the darkness."
